The Early Church and Peter's Primacy

Letter XXXIX To the Praetorian Prefect of Thessalonica

Synopsis: The Same as in the Previous Letter

Hormisda to the Praetorian Prefect of Thessalonica and Other Illustrious Persons

Although our concern for the ecclesiastical cause has never ceased, we have been more promptly incited by the sacred words of the most serene emperor to send legates with the favor of heavenly mercy, so that the good things we anticipate from the prince’s intention may be fulfilled through their efforts. Therefore, greeting your Excellency with the respect and honor due to you, we ask that you lend your efforts to the restoration of the faith, and do not allow the hopes of the faithful to be delayed for so long. For there is no doubt that your Excellency will acquire the reward of such great praise if, through you and by the working of our God’s mercy, what is desired by all good people comes to pass.

In the year of our Lord 519.
