Hormisda to John, Bishop of Constantinople
We have acknowledged what your charity has conveyed through the letters you sent, and we rejoice that the evidence of your faith has reached our conscience. We hope that our God may graciously grant full success to your intention, which we desire to be righteous, concerning ecclesiastical peace. We have taken up the hope of this in our minds with the help of divine majesty, for we believe that divine providence has chosen the most serene emperor for this purpose — that through him, the restoration of the Churches, longed for over so many years, may come to pass.
Therefore, although what needs to be done for the unity of the faith cannot be unknown to your charity, we have sent the legates that the cause required. Through their encouragement, both what we had already indicated long ago and what has been recently reiterated may, by the grace of our Lord, be brought to fulfillment.
