The Early Church and Peter's Primacy

Letter XLII to the Same Legates

Synopsis: He regrets that they have not written and mentions that he has sent Paulinus to the emperor.

Hormisdas to the above-mentioned.

Our mind is made anxious by this long period of waiting; especially since you were sent to such a great prince, you ought to have informed us more swiftly. For we believed that we would receive your letters before the day of the Lord’s Ascension. Therefore, we wish to know both the signs of your well-being and the progress of the cause which you have undertaken to complete with the help of our God.

We have taken care to send Paulinus, the defender of the Roman Church, with the present letters, directing letters both to the prince and to each of those to whom it was appropriate. For this reason, we pray to our God with fitting supplications that He Himself may protect your safety with His mercy and grant the desired outcome to the cause. For nothing greater is added to the titles of the best emperor than that the Greek Church, present and future, should deserve to proclaim him as the author of peace.

Given on the Calends of May, under the consulship of the most illustrious Eutharicus (in the year of our Lord 519).
