To the most blessed and apostolic father, Hormisdas, from Celer, an illustrious man.
We are provided with the greatest cause for rejoicing whenever the time comes to write to your apostolate. Now, with the return of the most blessed Bishop Germanus and the most reverend men who were sent by you to unite the holy Churches, we felt it necessary to offer reverence to your holiness, indicating that they indeed had the zeal to fully carry out your will. However, because the whole body was weak, in the meantime, the head, which was first judged necessary, has been healed through your remedy, and the dissension which existed between the venerable Churches of Rome and Constantinople has been buried with the intervention of unity. Moreover, other significant members have been purified and united by the same grace of Divinity.
We all hold this hope that the grace of God, which has always remained and continues to remain with your See, will inspire such goodness in you, so that through your gentleness and careful governance, the remaining body, which is still considered weak (as we have said above), may be healed by your remedy and restored to unity. We especially ask your pontificate to kindly command prayers for us with a father’s benevolent heart.
