The Early Church and Peter's Primacy

Copy of the Second Report By Germanus and John, Bishops, Felix and Dioscorus, Deacons, and Blandus, Presbyter.

Synopsis: On the Honor with which they were Received in Scampa

In the city of Aulon, by the grace of God, we arrived and were received by the bishop of that city. We have already informed Your Holiness in another letter about what happened, the response given, and the bishop’s promise to draft a document with his metropolitan. What occurred in the city of Scampa, we cannot omit to mention due to your prayers.

Before we entered the city, the venerable Bishop Trojus (Troilus), along with his clergy and people, came out to meet us. We inform Your Apostolic See how God was blessed on that day and the celebration that followed due to his piety. In our presence, along with his clergy and the noblemen of the city, he signed the document and presented it to us. We accepted it, and in the presence of all the clergy and people, it was read aloud by your servant Peter, the notary of the Holy Roman Church. The assembly took place in the Basilica of Saint Peter.

We confess to Your Holiness that we have rarely seen such devotion, so many praises to God, so many tears, and such joy in another people. Almost everyone welcomed us into the city with candles, men and women, soldiers with crosses. The Masses were celebrated, and the name of no one opposed to the religion was mentioned, except only Yours. Our venerable Bishop Germanus celebrated the Mass. They promised that no other names would be recited afterward, except those accepted by the Apostolic See. May God in His mercy preserve what has been accomplished by us in you.

We wrote this letter thirty miles before reaching Lignidus, hoping to arrive in that city on the same day with God’s help. As the Bishop of Scampa came to us, we hope the Bishop of Lignidus will do likewise. If this happens, we will write again at the appropriate time.

While staying in Scampa, after the Masses, at the hour of supper, Stephanus and Leontius, illustrious men sent by the emperor, came to meet us, still unaware that we were in the Greek regions, as orders had been given to Count Stephanus to cross into Italy to meet us. This Stephanus, as is now said, is of the lineage of your son, Vitalian, the master of the soldiers. They informed us that Senator Patricius had been exiled. However, for what reason, unless it becomes known to us, we cannot say, for it is not easy to deliberate on such matters.

It is also said that the representatives of the Church of Thessalonica are being held, with letters allegedly found with them, though we do not know for what reason. With them are Philumenus, Demetrius, Magistrianus, and other persons whose names we do not know. These are, as we have said, what we have heard. As for the ecclesiastical matter, good news is being reported, thanks to God’s mercy.

Regarding Cosmas the physician, we could not fully understand why he came to Italy, except that he is being sought out vigorously, about which you should be concerned to know why he came there.
