The Early Church and Peter's Primacy

Copy of the Letter from Pompeius to Hormisdas

Synopsis: On the Defeat of Heresy and the Establishment of Peace in the Eastern Church, Congratulating the Pontiff

To my most blessed and apostolic father, Hormisdas, Archbishop of the Universal Church, Pompeius.

Through the holy prayers of your blessedness, the mercy of Almighty God has been entreated to grant us a prince of such faith that, through the merits of his most religious clemency, the restoration of ecclesiastical peace—long desired by the prayers of all the faithful—has rightly been granted. In the success of this king, the most solid foundations of his principality have been established by the operation of the Holy Spirit, which holds such strength of invincible stability as the excellence of his unique and admirable action is esteemed.

Therefore, greeting the revered blessedness of your pontificate with the respect of reciprocal communication, we ask that you increasingly pray for the prosperity of our most merciful and invincible lord, our prince. May the ineffable mercy of Almighty God, with the aid of His grace, guard His gifts, in which the fruit of your labor also flourishes. May the holy intercession of your pontifical sanctity also stand as a support for us, your spiritual children, united to you in affection, who have always been deeply concerned with this work (in the year of our Lord 519).
