The Early Church and Peter's Primacy

Letter of Epiphanius to Hormisdas

Synopsis: Sent on behalf of the Easterners to the Emperor, asking for unity among the Churches.

To my most beloved lord in all things, God-fearing and most holy brother and fellow minister, Hormisdas, Epiphanius, bishop, sends greetings in the Lord.

How much eagerness and desire the most pious and Christian emperor has for the perfect unity of all the Churches, he has shown not only by his will but also by his deeds to those residing in this royal city, even before he reached the throne granted to him by God. Your holiness has been made especially aware of this by the efforts from the beginning of his reign until now, through which he strives with all readiness to unite all members of the Catholic Church into one body of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

And what need is there for lengthy words when we can bear witness to these things with the reality itself? You have proof of it, which you have learned through writings, and what is now added confirms it. For certain religious priests from the regions of the East, under his powerful hand, have presented petitions, explaining what they desired. Not wishing to keep this from your holiness, he has wisely decided to inform your holiness in the present, and to reveal this to you more clearly a little later. Thus, with a preceding common council of all, may the matters that pertain to the common benefit and are universally blameless become evident through corrections to the Catholic faith in our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Considering this to be timely, I entreat your holiness with fraternal letters and dearest greetings to pray even more earnestly for our most pious prince before the Lord God of all.

I, too, and those with me, greet all the brotherhood in Christ who are with your holiness most warmly.

By another hand: In good health, pray for us in the Lord, beloved of God and most holy father.
