To my most beloved lord in all things, God-fearing and most holy brother and fellow minister, Hormisdas, Epiphanius sends greetings in the Lord.
Paulinus, the defender of your See, who delivered your letter and showed forth the virtue of your holiness, has lived among us with joy, sharing his diligence with our common counsels and deeds. But since it was not proper for him, who was hastening to you, to be delayed for a longer time, we therefore commend to your holiness this man who stands as a faithful servant, worthy of our love and protection. He will also be a worthy narrator of what we have done concerning your mind and the care we have for the holy Churches, with vigilance according to faith.
By the prayers of your holiness, we, seeing the inherent goodness of this matter, have shown great diligence; and with God’s help, in many instances, the word of grace proceeds without any obstacle, leading to the fulfillment of our intention. However, since some difficulties have arisen, we must rely on prudent governance and properly explain what is being addressed here, as your holiness understands all things. And, as is fitting for those who are chosen to shepherd the flocks of God, we strive to do all things to the glory of God, having hope for salvation in Him, as it is written: All things work together for good for those who love God (Rom. viii). Therefore, as has been said, we strive to think and act in ways that are pleasing to you, most holy one.
All the brotherhood in Christ who are with your holiness I also greet most warmly, together with those who are with me.
