The Early Church and Peter's Primacy

Letter LXIV to John, Bishop of Melicitanus (Church of Militana)

Synopsis: The Church of Constantinople has returned to communion with the Apostolic See.

Hormisdas to John, Bishop of Melicitanus (or Nilopolis).

We do not wish our desires to remain unknown to your charity, lest one who shared in our concerns should be left out from the fruits of our joy. Therefore, we inform you, through this communication, that the Church of Constantinople has returned to our communion, with the Lord’s favor. The mandates we gave to our legates have been completely fulfilled in all respects.

To bring fuller joy to your affection, we have decided to send along the texts of the profession of faith by our brother and fellow bishop John of Constantinople and the sacred letters of Justin, the most merciful prince of the East. We also indicate that many bishops throughout the East have done likewise. It remains for us to pray appropriately so that God may grant us the grace to rejoice in the restoration of other Churches as well.

Ensure that what we have conveyed to you reaches the attention of the priests who are near your fraternity so that they too may join us in continually giving thanks to the Divine Mercy for the success of such a great cause.

May God keep you safe, most beloved brother.
