The Early Church and Peter's Primacy

Decree of Pope Symmachus

Synopsis: Pope Symmachus decrees that priests who violate their spiritual daughters or penitents lose their dignity and submit to lifelong penance.

Symmachus, bishop of the Apostolic See, decrees:

All whom we receive in penance are our spiritual children, just as those regenerated by the sacred waters of baptism, whether through our reception or the threefold immersion. Sylvester also teaches, admonishing every priest not to approach his penitent for fornication, for it is written: all whom we receive in penance are our children, as those received in baptism. Therefore, we decree that anyone committing this crime not only lose the honor of their dignity but also submit to perpetual penance until the end of their life.
