It would have been desirable and in accordance with our wishes to announce news consistent with the past, namely, that John, the Bishop of the Church of Constantinople, was still alive and that the confession written in his booklet remains. His merits are undoubtedly pleasing to God, who deserved to depart from this life among the Catholics and those in communion with the Apostolic See. In his place, a certain Epiphanius, formerly his syncellus (assistant), has succeeded as bishop. His beginnings seem promising; he speaks reasonably and promises to adhere to the rules of the Fathers, not to disrupt the peace and unity established, but rather to strengthen it. These are the promises he makes. However, we still do not know what he can accomplish in action.
We sent this letter on the fourth day after his ordination, having found an opportunity. We have not yet communicated with him; not because we are resisting, but because we have not yet been invited by him. It remains for your blessedness to pray that, with the help of divine grace, he may emerge in such a way that we may rejoice in perfect unity. Received on the seventh day before the Ides of April, in the consulship of the noble Rusticus (year of our Lord 520).
