Justin Augustus to Pope Hormisdas.
John, the most blessed man and bishop of this royal city, along with other religious men and bishops from various places and cities who are currently here, have informed our serenity that, for the sake of the concord of those who hold the true and orthodox faith and for the unity of their venerable Churches, they have prepared letters to be offered to your holiness. They have also greatly requested that our epistolary pages on this matter be sent to you.
As lovers of unity, we have gladly embraced their requests and have decided to extend these divine letters to your blessedness. Through these writings, may you fulfill the desires of the aforementioned most reverend bishops and also be gracious enough to pray to the supreme majesty on our behalf and for the republic, whose governance has been divinely entrusted to our piety. Moreover, to ensure that the rights of peace, unity, and concord of your holiness are fully manifested, may you arrange for some of the most devout priests who desire peace to come to our sacred company.
For this reason, we have sent Gratus, a most illustrious man, count of our sacred consistory, and master of the offices and memory, whose honorable reputation has been well-known to us for many years.
Given on the seventh of the ides of September, in Constantinople, under the consulship of the most illustrious Magnus (year of our Lord 518).
