We desire that whatever is done with greater caution and firmness may be done for the sake of the holy faith and the concord of the holy Churches. Thus, our most glorious brother Vitalian has also written to your beatitude through Paulinus, the eminent defender of your Church, and we have taken care to convey through him that your beatitude should accomplish those things that bring peace and concord to the holy Churches. Meanwhile, we have dispatched someone with letters from our most pious emperor to bring a more definite response to your holiness. Indeed, the aforementioned religious defender can also inform your holiness of the great conflict that has arisen in our regions.
Therefore, we ask that, if it is possible, after providing a very prompt response and satisfying the religious monks, you send John and Leontius back to us. For unless this matter is resolved by your prayers and diligence, we fear that the peace of the holy Churches may not be achieved. Therefore, knowing that both the reward and the peril of this matter are reserved for you, handle it diligently, and if possible, send back a very firm response through the aforementioned religious monks before our envoy reaches your beatitude; for all our intention hangs upon this alone.
