The Early Church and Peter's Primacy

Letter John, Bishop of Constantinople

Synopsis: The day of the Lord’s Passion should be rightly celebrated on the thirteenth day before the Calends of May.

To my most beloved brother and co-minister in the Lord, Hormisdas, most holy in God, greetings.

Just as we hold you, dearest brother, in our hearts with pure intentions and spiritual love, and just as we consider you in every way worthy of reverence, we believe that your reverence is satisfied by these works, as we obey the Lord’s clear command: “Whatever you wish others to do for you, do also for them” (Matthew 7:12), and we embrace the apostolic teaching: “Outdo one another in showing honor” (Romans 12:10). We hasten to show this in our actions, maintaining an unbreakable bond of spiritual love for the unity of the holy Churches. With the help of the holy and consubstantial Trinity and the intercession of the glorious and true Mother of God, Mary, we pray that we may remain steadfast against the blows of opposing spirits and the disturbances caused by the enemy of truth.

Through these means, most holy lord, we pray for the steadfastness of our holy Churches and yours, as well as for the preservation of the inseparable unity of faith. God is able to grant the palm of victory to those who trust in Him without conflict. Concerning the number of days leading up to the celebration of the Lord’s Passion, which is mentioned in your letters, we affirm that, according to the records of the paschal annals preserved here, we have calculated it correctly (as we knew beforehand) and, after careful investigation, we wish to celebrate the world’s feast day without any doubt on the thirteenth day before the Calends of May, which is precisely the nineteenth day of the upcoming month of April.

Pray, therefore, and may your mind, most holy one, never forget us in your memory. In Christ, I and those with me send our warmest greetings to all the brotherhood in your holy community.

By another hand: Safe in the Lord, pray for us, beloved of God and most holy brother. Given at Constantinople, on the fourteenth day before the Calends of February, in the consulship of Vitalianus and Rusticus (year of our Lord 520).
